Community Health Youth Brigade in Tangke, Talisay City, Cebu, Philippines (Community Extension Activity 2013)

(This is my reflection paper in our CWTS activity back in the year 2013 when I was still a 2nd year nursing student in Cebu City)

We started off with a quick ride on the bus towards Sitio San Rafael, Brgy. Tangke, Talisay. It was not actually my first time to go the place because 6 of us already had been there. We are tasked that time to ask permission to the Barangay captain if we could conduct our NSTP activity in their sitio and she readily agreed. The houses their are cramped and small and the place is nearby the sea which reminds me of our sitio in Brgy. Mambaling. So it is actually not new to me to go to slum areas.

The trek towards the chapel, which is the venue of the first aid seminar, is actually a challenge. The slight rain made the road muddy and it is also rocky at the same time. Still, we are determined to reach our destination. When we arrived at the chapel I started feeling dizzy because I was actually wet by a little rain and I was exposed to the sun when we had our trek. Our group rested for a while upon waiting to the Community Health Youth Brigade, which is the beneficiary of the First aid training. When the Community Health Youth Brigade arrived, the program started and it is opened by a prayer and an opening remark from our NSTP teacher. Then, the first aid training/seminar proceeded immediately.

Two nursing students and two health aides were tasked to be speakers of the event. They taught the Community Health Youth Brigade about the basic first aid that we could apply to 3 common problems that could occur at home or in the community. They taught basic first aid for cute, burns and animal bites. The youth group were actually attentive & cooperative. When it's their time to do a return demonstration to the skills taught to them, they were more than willing to do it. It just means that they were really taking it seriously and they were fast learners. After the seminar, we distributed hand-outs and food to youth. The 11 leaders of the youth brigade were also given T-shirts as their uniform for the coming seminars. The event ended with a picture-taking together with the youth brigade.

Even though the activity was a bit tiring, but I felt happy to be part of this event, because it gave me an opportunity to experience something new at the same time helping other people. I just hop the youth who participated in the first aid training/seminar will not forget the knowledge imparted to them. I hope that the skill they learn from the event will be able to save lives and help the community.
